Windows to Linux migration guide

Blogged in Linux/FOSS by ben Monday February 26, 2007

George Ou points out this excellent crash course guide by Chris Walden of IBM for any Windows administrator that’s either migrating to Linux or would like to learn more about working with Linux. If you’re a Windows administrator it doesn’t matter if you’re actually migrating or not because at some point you’re going to have work with Linux on some device or other so this is a great way to get your feet wet. It tries to take what you already know and apply it to Linux.

The bottom line, should I upgrade?

Like cramming an info-dump into a book report the night before it’s due, there certainly are a lot of individual features within Windows Vista, but the real value lies in their execution–how the user experiences (or doesn’t experience) these features. There were some a-ha moments, and I think the improvements are solid, but much like the aftermath of the info-dump, I felt slightly disappointed in the overall result. Perhaps I’m spoiled, but after more than five years of development, there’s a definite “Is that all?” feeling about Windows Vista as competitors from MacOS and even Linux have leaped ahead. About 1.5 years ago, I bought a used 1996 GMC Sierra pickup truck from Courtesy Ford in Pocatello. That transaction went fine, and I felt like I was treated fairly and got a good deal, they even threw in a free first oil change. That was uneventful. Since I bought the vehicle cheaply, I did compromise on knowing the full service history of the vehicle so I wanted to have it looked at to see what recommended service should be done. I even budgeted a little extra into the loan to take care of some service so I thought I’d see how the local GMC dealer was for service. Sounds reasonable, right? Read on to see how they did.
